What Is Magic Johnson Doing Indeed?

Even if you don’t care about sports or the business of sports, you should pay attention to this.  Magic Johnson (yes, I’m a huge fan, but hey even Larry Bird is a huge fan of Magic Johnson) has sold his interest in the Los Angeles Lakers and his 105 Starbucks locations over a very short period of time.  Assuming he’s not trying to raise a quick $200 million to pay off a bad horse racing debt, it means he’s positioning himself to buy something else.

In addition to the good analysis at the link above, I’d add this:  he loves the things he just sold.  Obviously, the Lakers are part of his very identity and his inner-city Starbucks locations have been one of the most inspirational success stories since the ’92 riots.  If he’s selling those assets, it stands to reason, and knowing what we think we know about him, that he’s trying to buy something else that is near and dear to his heart.

Some have suggested the Detroit Pistons, since he’s a Michigan guy and obviously does understand that his life is bigger than basketball (unlike some I could name).  Some have suggested he wants to buy the Orlando Magic, because, you know, they’re called the Magic.

If I were betting, I’d say he’s going to be partners with the amazing Mike Ilitch in the Pistons, but what do I know?  I thought Lebron was going to use his playing career to make himself a transcendent hero of the city of Cleveland, when in fact all he wanted to do was hang out at the beach with his buddies.

But let’s not dwell on the not-entirely-positive.  Let’s just see what Magic is up to.
