In a Live 2.0 World, You Are Your Marketing

Amanda Ameer has some good tips for musicians and other performing artists about how to grow during a down economic market, and they’re well worth reading.

She starts by referring to her joke earlier this year that with Lehman Brothers and other big donors evaporating, ” finally the economics of the arts and the rest of the world had evened out, but…it’s all gotten progressively less funny.”

Again, I agree with her in the broad brush, but what’s important to understand about Live 2.0 is that artists and organizations must be responsible for their own marketing.

Artists and performers are way too attracted to the “Leonardo-was-hired-by-the-Medicis-so-somebody-should-pay-me-to-do-what-I-want-too” mentality.

That’s easy.  That’s lazy.  The Big L lived in a different universe, with few or no means of communication and a potential sellable worldwide audience of probably 100 people.

You’ve got a huge audience, potentially.  It’s just hard work to unearth it.
