Ticketmaster-Live Nation Merger Wrinkle

By Jim McCarthy 0 comments

I’ve said on several occasions that I expected the Live Nation-Ticketmaster merger to be complete about now.

I knew something had changed when I read that Live Nation had written a brief outlining the ‘flaws’ in the ruling on the merger in the UK.
Because that means they’re fighting.
I expected that the [...]

By Jim McCarthy 0 comments

Today in the LA Times’ blog Culture Monster, some NEA stats were revealed about the drops in attendance in several traditional forms of art performances, including classical music, ballet and jazz, and also art gallery and museum attendance.
Here’s the key tidbit:
“Nearly 35% of U.S. adults – or about 78 million people – attended an art [...]

How NOT to Save Online Advertising

By Jim McCarthy 0 comments

Putting aside for the moment the fact that I actually believe we shouldn’t try to save advertising, here’s a great way NOT to save advertising (if you’re into that sort of thing.)
It probably won’t work after today, but go to this link and this link, and I suspect many others around the web.  If you [...]

The Wandering Tribe of Hopeful Advertising Dollars…

By Jim McCarthy 0 comments

Imagine a band of tribespeople, wandering the vast plains, looking for a place to call home.  As they travel, all they want is a place where they can set up their camp and live prosperous lives.
The trouble is that everywhere they go, they almost immediately deplete the area’s resources, befoul the skies, poison the water [...]

3 Steps to Saving Sunset Strip

By Jim McCarthy 0 comments

Before I start, I should give the disclaimer that I don’t claim to have any specific expertise in managing a live music venue, and there could be significant factors in this sub-segment of the live entertainment business of which I’m not aware.
But I do know how tickets get sold and what makes live entertainment venues [...]

The Nutcracker is Bad for Ballet like Easter is Bad for Churches

By Jim McCarthy 0 comments

I should start by saying that there’s no way you can consider me objective when it comes to the topic of The Nutcracker.  I’m the CEO of a company that gives an award each year called The Nutty to the performance around the country that our members like the most.
But there’s a reason we do [...]

Why Ben and Jerry’s Doesn’t Sell Hardware

By Jim McCarthy 0 comments

As you recall, we recently had a very interesting conversation with Greg Sandow about the future of classical music.  (First piece here, second piece here.)
What didn’t come up was the fact that Greg is writing a book on the topic and has gathered a group of informal advisers to give him input as he goes [...]
